In their own words

RH

Radzwan Hamid

Johor Bahru, Johor

"My father's automatic was running nearly seven minutes fast per day. I'd tried a couple of other places without much result. Mainspring took the time to explain what they found — a worn hairspring collet — and gave me the vibrograph readings before and after the adjustment. It now runs within fifteen seconds a day. The printed note they handed over with the watch was something I didn't expect."

"I inherited a Swiss dress watch with a bracelet that was three links too long. The resizing was done while I waited — it took less than an hour — and the clasp came back polished inside. A small thing, but the kind of care that shows in the result. I've since sent my husband's chronograph in for assessment."

"The chronograph service took about six weeks all in. They were upfront about that timeline from the start, and they messaged me when the replacement click spring arrived so I knew where things stood. The report they produced at the end was detailed — more than I expected. I had one question about the pushers after collection and they answered it without making me feel like I was bothering them."

Chong Teck Wei

Johor Bahru, Johor

"I've had watches serviced at brand centres before and always felt like I was handing it through a window and waiting. Coming here is different — the watchmaker sat with me at the counter and walked through what the vibrograph was showing. The calibration appointment felt like a conversation with someone who understood the piece rather than a job ticket being processed."

"My grandmother's wristwatch hadn't been wound in years and the crown had worked a little loose. I brought it in without knowing what to expect — it's not an expensive piece, but it matters to me. They assessed it at no charge, explained that the mainspring was still in fair condition, and suggested a bracelet service rather than a full overhaul. That kind of honesty is not something you find everywhere."

Marcus Fernandez

"I crossed from Singapore specifically for this workshop after seeing a recommendation on a collector forum. The bench service on my perpetual calendar took just under eight weeks. The report was comprehensive — four pages, which sounds like a lot but each section was clear and readable. The watch came back running within ten seconds a day in all positions. Worth the drive."

— In detail —

Three visits, described at length

For those deciding whether to bring a piece in, these accounts describe the full shape of a service visit — from the first conversation to collection.

— Case study 01 —

An inherited manual-wind running four minutes fast daily

The situation

A 1968 Swiss manual-wind piece, received from a deceased uncle. Running significantly fast — the owner had measured it at four to five minutes per day. No service record available.

What was done

Calibration appointment: vibrograph showed amplitude below 220° in the flat position, suggesting a dry mainspring. After regulator adjustment, a full service was recommended. Owner agreed; bench service followed over five weeks.

The outcome

Post-service timing: within 8 seconds per day in crown-up position, within 20 seconds across all five positions. The mainspring, pallet fork, and escape wheel jewel were the components replaced. Full report provided.

— Case study 02 —

Column-wheel chronograph with a non-resetting second hand

The situation

A 1975 Swiss column-wheel chronograph. The second hand would not reset to zero cleanly on the reset pusher — it would stop at approximately four seconds. The hour recorder was also sluggish.

What was done

Full bench service scoped at the first appointment. Disassembly revealed a worn heart-piece cam on the seconds column and a bent return hammer spring. Parts sourced from a specialist supplier in Europe over three weeks.

The outcome

Seven weeks total, as communicated at the first appointment. Both functions restored. The owner described the difference as "immediately obvious." Parts itemised in the written report; two original components returned separately on request.

— Case study 03 —

A purchased-second-hand bracelet that would not sit flat

The situation

A solid-link bracelet on a 1990s Swiss sports watch purchased without trying on. The fit was two links too generous, and several links had visible play in the pins — they rattled audibly on the wrist.

What was done

Two links removed using hollow pins with the correct driver. The loose pin joints — five in total — were re-staked to remove the play. The clasp was cleaned internally and the crown gasket checked; it was due replacement and was swapped at no additional charge.

The outcome

Completed within the same afternoon. The owner collected a bracelet that sat flat, moved silently, and had a clasp that closed with the correct resistance. Total cost: RM 290.
