How every service appointment is structured

Each of the three services at Mainspring Atelier follows a consistent approach: the work is assessed openly, the scope is agreed before anything is touched, and the completed job is documented and returned with a written note.

For calibration and bracelet work, the process usually resolves within a single visit. For complicated movement servicing, we stage the work across several appointments — both to allow proper curing time for lubricants after reassembly and to give ourselves time to source parts correctly rather than rushing to substitutes.

01

Initial assessment

The piece is signed in, its condition noted, and the owner describes what they've observed. We examine the movement before agreeing a scope.

02

Scope and price confirmed

For complex work, the quote is confirmed in writing before disassembly. For calibration and bracelet jobs, this step is brief and immediate.

03

Bench work

The movement or bracelet is worked on with calibre-appropriate tools, lubricants, and cleaning equipment. Measurements are taken throughout.

04

Documentation and collection

The completed job is accompanied by a written bench note. The owner collects the piece and the document together.

A watch movement being measured on a vibrograph

— Service 01 —

Movement Calibration and Timing

A focused appointment for owners who feel their watch is running a little fast or slow. We measure the movement in multiple positions on a vibrograph, examine the regulator and hairspring under loupe, and make small adjustments to bring the beat back within the calibre's intended range.

Where the variation indicates wear rather than regulation, we describe what we see, share the readings, and recommend a fuller service rather than pressing on with adjustments alone. The session includes a short written note with before-and-after measurements.

  • Measurement in five positions on a vibrograph
  • Beat rate, amplitude, and beat error recorded
  • Regulator and hairspring examined under loupe
  • Written note with before-and-after readings
  • Honest assessment if wear requires further work

Bracelet link removal with the correct pin tools

— Service 02 —

Bracelet Resizing and Linkwork

A small but careful piece of work for owners who have inherited a watch, bought one second-hand, or simply find the fit no longer suits them. We remove or add links using the appropriate pins or screws, dress any sharp edges, and check that the clasp closes evenly.

Where end links have become loose, we replace spring bars and inspect lug holes. Includes a fresh polish of the clasp interior and a courtesy check of the gasket on screw-down crowns.

  • Links added or removed with calibre-correct pins
  • Sharp edges dressed after link removal
  • Clasp operation and fit checked
  • Spring bar replacement where loose
  • Clasp interior polished · Crown gasket courtesy check

Chronograph movement disassembled on a watchmaker's holder

— Service 03 —

Bench Service for Complicated Movements

A long-form service for chronographs, calendar watches, and other movements with additional mechanisms. The work is staged over several weeks: a first appointment to set expectations and quote the scope, an interim disassembly and cleaning step, parts sourcing where needed, and a final reassembly and timing under loupe.

Each pusher, lever, and date wheel is checked for the resistance and play described in the service sheet. A typed report describes what was found, what was replaced, and what was left as original.

  • Full disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, re-lubrication
  • All levers, pushers, and date wheels checked for play
  • Parts sourced where necessary — itemised in quote
  • Final timing under loupe in multiple positions
  • Typed service report with all findings and actions

Arrange Bench Service

— Which service? —

Choosing the right appointment

Each service addresses a different type of issue. If you are unsure which applies, a walk-in conversation at the workshop will help us point you in the right direction.

What you've noticed Calibration & Timing Bracelet & Linkwork Bench Service
Watch gaining or losing time if wear is present
Bracelet too loose or too tight
Clasp not closing properly
Chronograph pusher not resetting
Date complication running incorrectly
Watch hasn't been serviced in 10+ years start here (for complication)
Spring bars worn, lugs loose

Not sure which service applies? Walk in during opening hours and we'll advise at no charge.

— Shared standards —

What applies to every service, regardless of scope

Secure custody

Each piece is signed in by job number and stored in a padded tray during service. Nothing is left on an open bench overnight.

Written documentation

Every completed job includes a typed bench note. The owner receives this alongside the piece — it is part of what the service delivers.

Grade-matched lubricants

We use different lubricant grades for different friction points. No single product is applied across the full movement.

No work without agreement

The scope of work is confirmed before we begin. Additional findings are reported; no additional work proceeds without your knowledge.
